Why sign up?

There is nothing special about signing up -- anyone can participate in this virtual book club by following the Twitter hashtag #ungrading.

However, if you want to join our month-end Zoom sessions, we will use the email that you provide to send you the specific Zoom meeting details. In short, we want to know that you are actually you, so we can prevent any "zoombombing"!

Another advantage of signing up is that you'll be invited to a FREE tool called Sutori, a meeting space designed for book club members to share their professional information or experiences, exchange ideas, ask questions, and provide one another advice, suggestions, and feedback. This will be a more private area where we can extend our conversations and collaboration outside of Twitter. We'll even provide some sub-groups that you can join to connect with others who share the same interests regarding #ungrading.

Hopefully, our #ungrading approaches will evolve when we collaborate -- we are better together!

How will this book club work?

We hope to satisfy your meeting preferences by providing both asynchronous and synchronous options. You can be as engaged as you wish or according to your availability. Please click on the calendar link for a full schedule of Twitter chats and Zoom sessions -- all are on Saturdays at noon (EST) to expand the possibility for the most participants.

Twitter Chats

Picture
Each month, we'll try to tackle two chapters of the book. These chats will be held on Saturdays to accommodate as many participants as possible. A typical chat will be one-hour long and may involve 4-5 questions to prompt discussion. We'll follow the usual format for identifying questions (e.g., Q1) and answers (e.g., A1). We'll use the #ungrading hashtag to organize our chats.

Want to help moderate one of our Twitter chats? Sign up to join a group that will create the questions for the particular reading selection -- Meeting Moderators

Zoom Meetings

Picture
At the end of each month, we'll host a synchronous Zoom meeting for those who wish to connect and engage virtually face-to-face. These can serve as monthly "debrief" sessions where we discuss our impressions of the particular  month's Twitter chat. When you have signed up for the book club, we'll send meeting details to the email address that you provide. And, yes, if you are unable to make a Zoom session, we'll record it for you!

Pressbook

Picture
For those of you who wish to dig deeper into your #ungrading experience, I've created a "crowdsourced" Pressbook as a product from our book club -- Crowdsourcing Ungrading.

This is a
Creative Commons-licensed work, so it's openly published. Begin planning your contribution now! There is NO editing, evaluation, or judgment in Crowdsourcing Ungrading -- I'll just be compiling what's been sent to me. And I'll take anything you have -- blog postings, articles, sample assignments, syllabi, reflections, poems, short stories (yup -- that's right!), charts, graphs, cartoons, memes, etc. Whatever is honest and authentic about your #ungrading experience. It's our Pressbook, so we can make the rules!

If you've got something ready to go, you can upload a document file at this File Request.

Join the #ungrading movement!

The idea for a free virtual book club to discuss #UNgrading : Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead) was birthed on Saturday, 14 November 2020. By the next day, over 55 people signed up for the club.  This is such an important topic. So many caring, compassionate educators have begun their #ungrading journey!

How many people signed up? See the counter below for the number of book club participants. Keep spreading the word!
